Over 33% of children have suffered traumatic stress
Some students have experienced traumatic stress in their lives and it changes their worldview and impacts their behavior at school. For example, students may have witnessed school shootings, natural disasters like floods, fires or earthquakes, death of a parent or sibling, or personal trauma such as bullying, cyberbullying, a brain injury or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Teachers need to be aware of their students’ backgrounds so that they can respond to traumatic stress in students appropriately.
Common types of traumatic stress and how to handle them.
Some of my colleagues and I were discussing students we've worked with who have experienced severe trauma. Something that hit is us how many children suffer from traumatic stress; it turns out 33-95% of children depending upon where they are from. Unfortunately, there's not enough professional help for all the children that need it. This prompted us to work together on developing a mind map to help teachers identify common forms of traumatic stress they may encounter in their students and ways that they can help.
