Nursing Home Iftar

Remembering those who are alone

Many elderly lost their families during the Covid-19 pandemic and have no one to celebrate Ramadan with. The American Language Center Community Service Club organized a special Leilat el Kader Iftar at the Dar Mosnin nursing home in El Jadida. Students came to honor their elders by serving them Iftar as they shared their stories and brought the past to life in vivid inspiring colors.

Background

Leilat el Kader is one of the most holy times in Islam. It is believed that God revealed the Quran to Mohamed. The sanctity and family togetherness of this time reminds me of the time around Christmas and, much like Christmas, nobody should have to celebrate alone if they don't want to.

During our annual Ramadan Food Drive, the Community Service Club at the American Language Center El Jadida came across an association that takes care of elderly who have no family. Their hearts were moved and they began working with local businesses and individuals to collect donations for a special Iftar during the holiest time of the year.

The elderly are not a nuisance who must be taken care of or an obligation that must be endured. They are a vital part of our society passing along skills, holding the memories of the community, and caring for and guiding those who came after them. Everyone who came, regardless of origin or social status, served Iftar without being asked and spent the entire night sharing and listening to the lives and stories of the people who have no one else.

Thank you to those who helped. Including but certainly not limited to:
