An analysis of student achievement
There are many factors that contribute to student achievement. These factors can include everything from cognitive ability to parental involvement and other environmental factors. As a teacher, it is important to review and analyze which of these factors influence each student’s achievement positively and negatively and use this data to inform your instructional strategies and practices. This information helps you begin to diagnose your students’ academic and developmental needs. It can also help you identify areas for improvement in the classroom or school environment, policies, and processes.
For this infographique, these influences were examined and applied to a student population. The selected student population was limited to all of the English classes taught by one teacher to minimize variables.
The goal of this information analysis is to help begin thinking of ways to differentiate instruction to meet student academic and development needs. It can also help identify any achievement gaps that exist at the school, state, or national (country) level.
Process:
Collect and review academic achievement levels of a colleague's current students.
Compare the student achievement levels with Hattie’s influences and effect sizes to analyze which positive and negative influences are applicable to student achievement levels.
Create an infographic that presents your recommendations on how your school can use this information and data to make decisions about teaching and learning.
These guiding questions were used as a starting point:
What are some considerations to make when determining influences and applying it to your school in general, and your classroom specifically?
How do you see this as being useful in improving student learning? What do you think might be some challenges?
How might your school’s context play a role in student learning? (Context could include demographics, backgrounds, school culture vs. student diversity)
In moving forward, what recommendations would you make to your school to make improvements in student learning and achievement?
What tools, resources, or strategies would you use to make improvements in your classroom?
